What Are No Reflection Lenses?

You may hear these lenses described as no reflection glasses, low reflection lenses, anti reflective lenses or a more advanced type of anti glare lens.
There is one important detail we always explain to customers: “no reflection” does not mean that absolutely no light will ever reflect from the lenses. It is a convenient name for an extremely low level of reflection. Under certain angles and strong lighting, some faint reflection can still be visible.
What makes the difference is how little that reflection stands out. Instead of a noticeable green or blue reflex, the lenses are designed to appear much clearer and more natural on your face.
How Are Low Reflection Lenses Different From Regular Anti Glare Lenses?
Conventional anti glare lenses are already a useful improvement over uncoated lenses. Their anti reflective coating reduces the amount of light bouncing off the front and back surfaces of the lens.
However, many standard coatings leave behind a visible residual reflection. Depending on the coating, that reflection can look green, blue, purple or another colour, particularly when viewed under bright lighting or through a phone camera.
That coloured shine does not necessarily mean the coating is defective. It is a result of the way the remaining reflected wavelengths of light interact with the coating. A good conventional anti glare coating can still perform well, even if its residual colour is noticeable.
Advanced low reflection lenses take a different priority: they aim to make those surface reflections especially subtle. The difference is often most obvious to the person looking at your glasses, rather than through them.
This is why we recommend thinking about two questions separately:
- Do you want less distracting reflection when looking through your glasses?
- Do you also want your lenses to appear almost invisible to other people, without a prominent green or blue shine?

Tokai NRC: Premium No Reflection Lenses
One of the premium solutions we offer is Tokai NRC, which stands for No Reflection Coating. Tokai is a Japanese optical lens manufacturer known for specialised lens materials and coating technologies.
NRC is designed to dramatically reduce visible surface reflections and make the wearer’s eyes easier to see. This makes it particularly appealing for people who want their glasses to look discreet in person and on camera.
Tokai reports a sensed reflectance of approximately 0.19% in a specific measurement of an NRC coated lens with a refractive index of 1.60. That is a manufacturer reported measurement for that particular lens and test, not a promise that every NRC lens will have exactly the same figure. NRC also comes with practical coating features, including water repellency, resistance to scratches and reduced attraction of dust. These can make everyday care more convenient, although no spectacle lens is completely scratch proof or damage proof.

Do You Have to Choose the Most Expensive Option?

We also offer a more affordable low reflection lens option with a Teflon coating for customers who want a subtle, natural appearance but would prefer to spend less. The Teflon coating is an additional practical feature, associated with a surface that is easier to maintain and clean. It can be an excellent option depending on your needs, prescription and expectations.
It is important to understand that Teflon coating and low reflection are not interchangeable terms. The amount of reflection you see depends on the lens’s optical coating design. A Teflon coating can be part of the overall lens treatment, but the name by itself does not tell you how the lens compares with Tokai NRC in measured reflectance.
Our Teflon offering is a good buget option, giving an average of a 25% improvement vs standard antiglare lenses. However, it’s performance isnt as good as the Tokai NRC offering. Different lenses can vary in the amount of residual reflection, durability, cleaning properties, available materials and overall cost.
When possible, we encourage customers to compare the lens reflections in person under similar lighting. It is a simple and useful way to understand what you are paying for.
